There's a small plate underneath that says: "Once upon a time, Helvetia left the SFr. 2.- coin and undertook a long journey. She passed Basel as well. After an exhausting walk through the town she put down coat, buckler, spear and suitcase and took a rest, her eyes following the course of the rhine pensively." Artist: Bettina Eichin, year: 1978/80.
"Helvetia" is for switzerland, what "Marianne" is for france: some kind of personification of the republic.
